Apple Special Event on February 20

We have just gotten an anonymous tip from a source that indicates that Apple is planning a special event on February 20 to introduce Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), iLife ’07 and iWork ’07 as well as updated Mac Pros. Mac Pros will be available immediately with a free upgrade to 10.5 when it ships, and the ship date for 10.5 will be confirmed for 3/24/07 as we have been predicting for quite some time now. There is some speculation that we may see a week earlier or later for this event, depending on the status of Leopard, but this is the most likely date which is being planned (by this time, Leopard’s new interface will be complete and the OS will be finishing up testing). What better way to demo Leopard than with a brand new 8-core Mac Pro?

Many will remember that last year, not long after Macworld, Apple had a special event on February 28, 2006, to introduce new Intel Mac Minis and iPod HiFi (see their PR archive here).

The real question on everyone’s mind, however, is…

will we see anything unexpected? Like an updated touchscreen iPod? Or perhaps a 12″ ultra-portable Mac Book Pro? We continue to believe that it’s still going to be a little bit longer before we see either of those… NAB is coming up in April (the 14th-19th) and we’d peg updated Mac Book Pros at this event.

And then, dear Apple Recon Reader (ARR!! :), when will we see the full screen iPod and updated Mac Minis, iMacs, etc.? We don’t have any recon on that, so we’re not just going to make up something like some of the other guys would…if you have any ideas, sound off in the comments section below!

As always, a couple seconds out of your day to Digg us means a great deal to our humble site (more viewers = more exposure, more exposure = more sources, more sources = more recon), much appreciated!!

Digg It!

No OS X on Feb 20. The OS X 10.5 is not ready. Plus Apple is waiting for Vista to start failing so they can adjust their OS X 10.5 marketing campaign accordingly. OS X will probably come out in April together with some other cool updates.

Apple already introduced the Wide Screen iPOD. It’s the iPhone. I don’t think they are going to announce one to still the iPhone’s thunder.

A 12″ MacBook would be awesome.

  11. Tom says:

The storage on the iPhone is limited. Apple would be smart to either release a HDD based iPhone, or make a touch screen iPod available. With the ability to play video in a wide screen format, people are going to want to store as much as possible. Even though it would steal some of their own thunder, I think apple will, and should, release a wide screen iPod.

For me, regardless of how cool it is, I don’t need or want a $500 or 600 phone with only an 8gb storage for music or movies. I don’t want sub-notebook, tablet or touchscreen, just a nice medium sized machine that looks and feels right on my lap in front of the telly or whatever.

I have a 17″ MacBook Pro and I’d love that kind of power in a non-widescreen 12″ form factor.

I’m thinking almost the same as the 12″ Powerbook, but a little slimmer and lighter, and with some of that Core 2 Duo goodness!

Ringo and the Nimrod CEO from Apple Corps will show up onstage with Steve to announce the new Apple-Apple truce, but in spite of the wonderful news (all re-mastered Beatles songs available exclusively on iTunes for 3 months), people are crushed that McCartney isn’t there too (prior commitments, and McCartney’s lawyers will not have finished excluding Heather Mills from any iTMS royalty sharing).

Add another wish to the 12″ MacBook Pro wishing well.

I’d like it to have one of the new 32GB solid state flash drives released by SanDisk recently and an LED backlit screen.

Just think, with these two components alone, and the removal of an optical drive, the battery could be much smaller while still providing 4 hours or longer uptime.

  45. Fake says:

Do you think Apple will introduce something really truly amazing in Leopard or just, well… an update? I’d love to see them clean up the UI a bit, if not an overhaul (though I’d probably rather them overhaul the UI when they come out with a new OS is 10 years). I have to think more integration will come between iLife, iWork and OS X, but the big question there is whether iWork will actually become something to compete at the lowest level even with Office. I have to admit I’d rather work in Word then in Pages, and I love Apple. I think Boot Camp has to be more than just a double boot solution, there has to be something else to it, more features (maybe all your files appear in Windows Vista automatically, just becuase Steve loves that word). I’m sure we’ll see full support for Vista, but in the terms of a .Mac update that lets you work on both a Mac and Vsta seamlessly, your files always updating across platforms, e-mails always there, and such. All of those bugs will probably be patched, and security improved even more. I don’t think we’ll see anything about new iPods, except maybe an update to iTunes (the UI, or something else that makes it compatable with some feature we don’t yet know about in OS X). The Mac Pro’s won’t feature a new design or anything, just a simple heart transplant to two four-core Intel processors. What I think might be cool is some more collaboration with AT&T. I noticed how they are marketing an integrated experience of their services across both “our wireline and wireless services”. Setting up an internet connection, even on a Mac, is a headache, not to mention what it’s like on Windows. If Apple would just make it simple, providing the front end hardware and software and allow AT&T to do the network stuff, I’ll go out and buy it the minute they announce. I’ve been waiting for a long time for a real integration of those “telecommunications” services and PC’s. Hey, that integration would be part of the new version of Mac OS X, those new intertnet tools, and part of .Mac…and probably iLife and iWork in some way. Suddenly it all makes sense *February 20, 2007* now.

  46. JustDoIt says:

The macbooks & newer powerbooks actually have something very similar on thier trackpads… one finger to move the cursor and 2 fingers to scroll in any direction… I think the multi-touch on the iPhone is just an updated and differently used technology they already have in thier products… I’m using a G4 powerbook and it works great! I actually go to use other laptops and I forget I can’t! It turns into a habit! Apple’s way ahead of ya… and you didn’t even know it.

I have a better chance of being elected President than Leopard does on being released on February 20th. I’ll be surprised if we get it before June.
I just hope MacPro is updated soon. It’s long over due for an update.

  126. James T. Kirk© says:

Well, tomorrow _is_ the 20th. Is the press already invited? 😉

  127. Yeah Right says:

    To quote:

“Tired of the sites that promise new postings, and never deliver?”

  128. Josh H. says:

I don’t think anyone is putting stock in this story anymore. Too bad.

If Apple Recon keeps up these “no show” announcement they may find themselves going the way of the dodo.

I AM, however starting to hear mumbling around the net about a Feb. 28th event. I’ve seen comments mentioning this on a couple of sites (I can’t remember which ones at the moment). Has anyone else read that anywhere?

  129. wag says:

Feb 28 would be a logical date when they ship there first iTV.

  130. […] oggi è quel 20 Febbraio in cui Apple Recon giurava ci sarebbero state molte novità nel mondo Apple, a partire dal lancio di Mac OS X 10.5 […]

  131. James T. Kirk© says:

For me, I’m dissappointed, I’m waiting for a Core2Duo Mini with Leopard, iLive’ 07, but there is a saying in my languagewhich says (translated) Promising lots and giving hardly, makes a fool live in happiness….

  132. Jon says:

Well, it’s Feb 20th… where’s the announcement from Apple?

  133. Grunge says:

Soooo, what is it know with this “special event”-rumor ?
Anybody invited by apple? any journalists?

  134. Bunghole x2 says:

    …february 20th, nooo announcment yet…!!!!

  135. Jameson says:

it’s the 20th, noon CST, and nothing
    got my hopes up

  136. worthlessinfo says:

yeah like mid-day and still nothing new on the apple front page (still iPhone) and no news stories breaking…I was really hoping for something.

  137. Henry says:

Don’t give up your hopes people. If its not today it will surely be early next month or late this month. They will have to preview iLife and iWork sometime before it’s released. And the secrets in OS X Leopard are too great to be hidden untill its release date. A special event must happen. Chances are we’ll know for sure it will be happening. Apple never really keeps special events secret, the products within them are the secret. We’ll usually see a invite posted on the internet, like that of WWDC 2007. Untill we see the invite for an event as extraordinary as its being made to seem, I think the claim is a bit hollow of an event today or this week.

  138. Jeff Ventura says:

Hey, what do you know? Apple Recon makes up wild speculation out of thin air, reports it as “exclusive,” and nothing happens.

Imagine that. How could it be?

Sometime soon, AR, you will learn that pure traffic doesn’t get you blogosphere longevity — good content does.

  139. angelrose81 says:

I can’t wait until leopard comes out. I got a 15″ MacBook pro and i love it! Can’t wait to get the new OS for it when it comes out!!!

Its gonna kick some Vista ass!!

  140. AppleRecon is Clueless says:

You guys don’t have a fuh king clue. Nice work. Thanks for getting everyones hopes up. You suck.

  141. DWalla says:

Looks like you are going to go the way of macosrumors.com….. total bust… maybe you should check your sources before laying out this kind of crap.

  142. AppleRecon is WAY Clueless says:

AppleRecon will hopefully drop to the bottom of the “most trusted” list. They don’t even post an update to this “anonymous” tip from a “source.” You suck.

  143. AppleRecon = Bullshit says:

Total bust, will never trust this idiot blog again. Nice press move, though, I’m sure your hits went through the roof….too bad it’s going to backfire on your lying asses.

P.S. WHY DON’T YOU APOLOGIZE OR MAKE SOME MENTION OF THIS ERROR IN A NEW ENTRY?

  144. Xam says:

    Yeah right…

You’re all *mugs* to be honest – and impatient mugs at that!. You can’t fast-forward life, guys – when it happens, it HAPPENS.. and until then, your impatient excitable little minds are going to just have to switch off and relax.

I appreciate you are excited, but gee whizz… CHILL OUT!!!!!!

I just sit patiently and don’t even worry about it. All this reminds me of the wrist-slashing stupidity, induced by Horoscopes and the suchlike – F*** what is gonna happen, and get on with what *IS* happening.

You sorry lot are just wishing ya lives away. Leopard will arrive, but when *Apple* tell you, not some “anonymous” retarded plankster. Get a grip, and stop being so gullible. Wish you all the best.

  151. Unlokia says:

They do indeed – Dyson & Microcack COMBINED, don’t suck as much as them.

  152. MiMac says:

This site is posting misinformation. You claimed the release date is confirmed as being 24 March which is nonsense, and then to say “it could be a week before or a week later” is just a way of covering your own backs if you’re wrong. If it’s released on the 27th are you going to say “Well thats only a few days after what we said so we were close”. If you are claiming you have factual and credible information stating the release date is 24 March, then that is what it will have to be. Since no such information was mentioned at any event on the 20th of February, I can assume you’re speculating, based on the web rumour that Mac OS 10.5 would be released on the anniversary of OS X. So much for being an anti-rumour website.
